Regarding the Crossfit the New Truth Serum article, it's good, the point can also be made that cheating is only hurting the cheater and not anyone else. As for the functional fitness in a transitional world article, I think it's pretty good, but I get the impression the author doesn't think much of quadriplegics since according to him, only "strong" people are useful and should be valued in society. What happens to those who don't have arms and legs? Do we euthanize them? Make less the burdens of the strong by eliminating those that are weak? And what of those that simply refuse to exercise at all? What do the "strong" do with them?

Having won the coveted Riverdale Crossfit Super-Pairs Athletic Competition in the 'open-age, open-weight, open-gender' category (often referred to as the Triple Crown in Crossfit circles), and having defended it successfully twice to all comers, Mike and Tom are retiring their championship belt. However, in order to appease our growing fanbase, we are entering the 'open-weight, open-gender, under 65 years of age category'. Furthermore, we automatically claim that belt as our rightful due. You want it? Come and take it! See Will Harris for details.

Haha... That was a close one last night Tom. A great victory nonetheless!

Ok... I definitely agree with you on the Truth Syrum article. People who cut their reps and cheat their form for the sake of a "better time" are only hurting themselves. My favorite line of the article is "CrossFit can show your true colors in 15 mins with a barbell and a stopwatch." Nothing could be more true than that!

Now in regard to the second article, in my opinion, I think it should be kind of assumed that our elders and those who are "not one of the strong" due to disability and of no fault of their own are not AND NEVER WILL BE a target. It is the responsibility of the strong ones as a whole to take care of them. Remember, your strength of character is just as important as your strength of body(at least here it is).

The problem lies with those who are WILLFULLY WEAK... Those are our enemies. Think about the people who shy away from hard work, responsibility, and duty. Think about those who refuse to work out or take care of themselves because they know they can destroy their bodies by smoking, eating crap, and drinking for most of their lives but they can still have the community at large pay for all the "medication" they can handle, surgery to slice bacon of their oversized asses, and a motorized scooter when they get too heavy to walk. Think about the weak minded crabs in the bucket who try to downplay your goals of becoming a stronger and fitter human being and who actually attempt to riducule you for being to dedicated to living a healthier life... What exactly are those people contributing to a healthy community? In my opinion, nothing...they are a strain on the moral, financial, and physical fibers of society.

So, what should we do with the willfully weak? That's an individual question. I help those who want to be helped and keep my distance from those who don't. I just know that if a zombie apocalypse occurs, the willfully weak will give them something to eat while we all escape, hahaha...

I agree with Will's assessment but I don't think that's the crux of the article. The author states that "functional fitness...gives independence from large scale systems." O' Yeah? No matter how fit you are, try reading without electric or battery-powered lights. Try hunting with a hand-made bow. Try teaching calculus to your kids in a 'home-school' environment. Think you won't need calculus? How else are you to progress from the apocolyptic era?
Being functionally fit is great since it increases your mental and physical independence, especially in older age. But it's intelligent, mentally tough people (regardless of their physical impairments) who'll power the recovery, and they'll take the physically fit along with them. Try reading Ayn Rand, "Atlas Shrugged". She should be the standard bearer of the Crossfit movement.

I read both of these articles last night around 11:15 or so. The Ran Prieur quote (“It won’t be like falling off a cliff, more like rolling down a rocky hill. There won’t be any clear before, during, or after. Most people living during the decline and fall of Rome didn’t even know it.”) kept playing in my head. As I walked to and from work I saw more obese than fit people. A pandemic is going on at this very moment and no one really seems to care. The only solution we give these people are bigger seat-belts, clothes and devices to help them move. I like the fact that Southwest is sticking it to the fatty's and not allowing Kevin Smith to board.

Tom I definitely agree with your logic. I was just responding to #2's comment from a general standpoint, not in regard to the article. Now, in response to your comment, I believe that the fact that the majority of people can't get by without batteries/electricity or hunt for their own food is a problem! Technological advances are a great thing, however they should not replace basic fundamental life skills. I believe that the waves of technological improvements over the last few decades have done just as much harm as they have good in many ways.

When you really take a good look at our society, it's to the point where you can get your hands on anything you want or need with almost no mental or physical exertion and little to no direct contact with another live human being. Just by sitting in front of a computer, you can have anything you want from any corner of the world and the most strenuous things you'll have to do are stare at a monitor, move your hand around a little bit, and walk to the front door after the delivery person drops off your package. Clearly it sounds absurd to us, but there are people who take full advantage of these "advances" and they expect every area of their life to be "automated". I believe that embracing the notion that we should return to the basic foundational aspects of living is the only way to reverse the generation by generation decline of society.

Men and women of your generation didn't have half the technological "luxuries" we have today, yet generally speaking, you all have twice the moral, physical, and mental capacities of those in my generation. What's worse is that the generation coming up behind mine is full of overweight asthmatics with poor social skills, low testosterone, and bad eyesight who don't even have the basic skills needed to change a tire!

Take our workouts as another example, you and Mike represent the two generations preceeding mine... We might joke about age in the gym, but think about it...with all the technology and newfound "knowlege" available to my generation, how are you two still able to lead the charge night in and night out? It's simply because you two learned to do more with less and you learned the value of hard work and discipline while we learn nothing but how to do things "easier". Again, just my opinion!
